What is Control Gear ?
Control Gear means a device which aids in the starting and running of certain types of lamps. This can be sited within the luminaire or remote from it.
Which lamps require Control Gear ?
A fluorescent lamp requires an electronic ballast to start the lamp and then control it's operation within the recommended voltage parameters. An electronic ballast should normally be sited within 1 metre of the lamp.
A low voltage lamp (usually halogen) requires a transformer to convert mains voltage to low voltage, typical conversion is from 240v to 12v. The distance the transformer should be sited from the lamp is dependant on site considerations such as thickness of cable used.
An LED requires a driver to reduce mains voltage to low voltage and to generally provide the unit with a consistent current. The distance the driver can be sited from the LED is dependant on site considerations such as thickness of cable used.
